A Stylish Home Wine Cellar Installed with a Refrigeration System from US Cellar Systems  

A family from Dallas recently approached the specialists to help them transform the space under their open staircase into a stylish custom wine display. The staircase was constructed with steel beams and bamboo wood steps, leaving gaps in between. The end of the space under the stairs remained open, and gray steel beams supported the bamboo landing. The flooring in the area was also bamboo. 

To get the project started, the specialists created a wine rack design using Alumasteel backer panels and a brushed aluminum Ultra Peg 2-bottle deep racking system. They strategically positioned the Alumasteel wallboards and the pegs to accommodate 222 bottles in the wine storage space. 

The customer had a specific vision for their wine cellar: lots of glass, brushed aluminum, and the gray shade of the existing steel beams. This design included a glass front, glass end wall, and even a glass ceiling. 

To help the customer visualize their options clearly, a small fee was paid to provide them with 3D color drawings displaying three different choices for the backer board and wall colors. Ultimately, they settled on gray walls, Alumasteel backer boards, and brushed aluminum pegs. Despite the narrow walkway to access the wine bottles, the cellar exudes a sense of beauty and pleasure. 

Wine Cooling System: Correct installation of Refrigerated Wine Cellar by Phoenix Experts  

The choice of an appropriate cooling system is vital for maintaining the stable environment required for the graceful aging of wine. 

When it comes to selecting the right size, capacity, type, and brand of the wine refrigeration system, seeking expert guidance is crucial. This ensures that the cooling system aligns with both the budget and storage needs. 

For the wine refrigeration unit, a cooling system was chosen to fit between the studs on the left wall. The wall was slightly expanded to accommodate 3 inches of foam behind the cooling unit. The compressor was positioned outdoors in the courtyard, directly opposite the cellar. 

Initially, the plan was to run the lines across the ceiling to the exterior. However, upon opening the wall on the left of the cellar, it became evident that this was unfeasible due to the beam layout. The customer preferred not to have the ceiling modified. Therefore, the lines were run down the inside of the adjoining elevator shaft, and a soffit was created on the lower level to facilitate running the lines across and out to the courtyard. 

The cooling unit found its place on the left end wall of the cellar, owing to the substantial amount of glass incorporated into the design. To accommodate this unique configuration, a WM6600 unit from US Cellar Systems was selected, known for its ability to mount vertically between standard wall studs and crafted from silver metal galvanized material. 

The WM Series refrigeration system boasts an array of features, including a digital thermostat, temperature sensor, exhaust-free operation, ease of installation, a rustproof aluminum housing, and a factory-installed automatic expansion valve for humidity control, factory wiring, pressure testing, and ETL certification. 

Typically, when used in cellars with wooden racks, the unit is discreetly concealed with a wooden cover. However, given the modern style of this particular cellar, a creative approach was taken. The unit was powder-coated to match the chosen wall paint color, which also closely harmonized with the steel beams comprising the staircase, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the space. 

Converting a Curve-Shaped Space under the Stairs into Refrigerated Wine Cellar  

The homeowners had a unique vision for their space: to transform the curved area under the staircase into a chilled wine cellar that exuded a modern charm, combining wood and metal elements. Initially, the space resembled a small coat closet situated at the staircase’s end, extending back just 2 ½ feet before meeting a wall. 

This award-winning project involved close collaboration with the Meyers to create a room that not only met their functional needs but also fulfilled their aesthetic desires. The original plan was to encase the space in glass on both sides. However, considering the weight and the curved design of the staircase, structural considerations dictated that the load-bearing studs needed to remain in place. 

Nevertheless, the specialists managed to create a cellar with windows and glass doors on both sides, creating a visually striking and open corner view without compromising the structural integrity of the stairs. The project began with demolishing the space to prepare it for construction. They framed the door, sidelight, and a large window, preserving a structural corner stud hidden by framing iron. The metal Vintage View racks, in brushed nickel, were then installed above. After the stone coat was applied, measurements were taken to determine the number and size of wine racks required, resulting in a total storage capacity of 428 bottles. The specialists also installed wood case storage with tabletops and a wood grill cover, concealing the fan coil. 

To add an extra touch of elegance, the wood components were manufactured in mahogany with a Chestnut Stain and Lacquer finish. Ribbon lighting was strategically placed behind the tabletops to create an upward illumination effect, accentuating the beauty of the metal racks. 

Installation of Wine Refrigeration Unit and Lighting  

They prepared for the refrigeration system installation by locating it above the door to maintain a seamless appearance. They concealed the US Cellar Systems RM 2600 cooling unit behind the door.  

Electrical rewiring was done for both the lighting and cooling unit, including the installation of a dedicated electrical line in the garage to accommodate the condensing unit. Additionally, they extended the drain line from the condensing unit to the home’s exterior, allowing it to release water into the garden area.   

After these installations, a thorough cooling system start-up and testing procedure guaranteed flawless operation.
